<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do women make harsher films than men? That was the view of director Kira Muratova, which defies stereotypical notions about so-called women’s cinema. In the documentary ‘No Mercy’, screened in the ‘Phenomena’ section, German director Isabella Willinger sets out to test the validity of this claim. She examines the work of such directors as Céline Sciamma (‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’), Alice Diop (‘Saint Omer’) and Virginie Despentes (‘Rape Me’).
In the discussion following the film, Dr Monika Talarczyk, alongside the director, will explore this phenomenon from the perspective of Polish cinema.

KFF Talks: What do images do to us?<\/a>

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The German-Austrian film essay ‘Holofiction’ will serve as a starting point for a discussion on how cinema influences our perception of reality, how — consciously or unconsciously — it shapes our view of the world, and how it manipulates us. Michał Kosakowski’s documentary, composed of several thousand fragments of feature films, displays (using only images, without a single word of commentary) repetitive patterns of the Holocaust depiction on screen, which have contributed to the consolidation of collective perceptions on the subject. Today, we are at a completely different juncture, for we are shaped not only by cinematic fiction or conventions but also by digitally generated images that mimic reality. How will this affect our perception of cinema and the responsibility of filmmakers? What does this technological and cultural revolution mean for feature film makers, and what for documentary filmmakers?
A discussion with the participation of Michał Kosakowski (‘Holofiction’), film scholar Dr Bartosz Kwieciński and Ola Salwa, a film critic.

Gaza, Sudan, Iran, Ukraine. Although civilians suffer in each of these wars, the media portray them very differently. We quickly become accustomed to the narrative set and rarely notice the nuances. Is this due to the laziness of the audience — or perhaps the indolence of journalists and cultural figures? How are hierarchies of war importance formed? And where do ‘forgotten’ wars stem from? A discussion featuring Dariusz Rosiak and Maciek Nabrdalik, a co-director of the film ‘Tickling the Devil’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
