On May 27, Sunday, starts the 58<\/b>th<\/b> edition of\u00a0Krakow Film Festival, one of\u00a0the oldest and the most recognisable events dedicated to\u00a0documentary, animated and short films.<\/b><\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
During the 8 festival days<\/b>, the audience will have a\u00a0chance to\u00a0see around 250 films<\/b> from Poland and the whole world, presented in\u00a04 competitions <\/b>and 12 non-competing sections<\/b>, often shown in Poland for the very first time. The screenings will be\u00a0complemented with Q&As, workshops and exhibitions, concerts and KFF Industry events for the film industry, including presentations of\u00a0new Polish documentary and animated projects.<\/p>\n

The festival will open with the screening of\u00a0a documentary film \u201cConcerto for Two\u201d by\u00a0Tomasz Drozdowicz \u2013 the colourful story of\u00a0an outstanding conductor, pianist and composer Jerzy Maksymiuk<\/b>, as\u00a0well as\u00a0an intimate description of\u00a0a special relationship he\u00a0has with his wife Ewa. The film will take part in\u00a0the international music documentary films competition DocFilmMusic and in\u00a0the national competition. The festival opening ceremony and the world premiere of\u00a0the film, which will be\u00a0attended by\u00a0the filmmakers and the main film characters themselves, will take place on\u00a0May 27th in\u00a0the Kij\u00f3w.Centrum theatre.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n This edition\u2019s special guest is\u00a0Estonian cinema. In\u00a0the \u201cFocus on\u00a0Estonia\u201d section the festival will present the latest documentary and short films from Estonia and a\u00a0special programme for kids and teenagers, as\u00a0well as\u00a0a selection of\u00a0student films.\u00a0The representatives of\u00a0the film industry from Estonia and Poland will meet at\u00a0the special conference.\u00a0The section will be\u00a0inaugurated on\u00a0May 28th in\u00a0the Kij\u00f3w.Centrum<\/strong> theatre with a\u00a0daring documentary \u201cRodeo\u201d showing the process of\u00a0breaking free from Soviet regime.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n This year\u2019s Dragon of\u00a0Dragons award <\/b>will go\u00a0to Sergei Loznitsa<\/b>, an\u00a0outstanding documentary filmmaker, who have won awards in\u00a0Krakow many times before. The programme includes the retrospective of\u00a0Loznitsa\u2019s films and his master class. The official Dragon of\u00a0Dragons award ceremony will take place on\u00a0May 29th<\/strong> in\u00a0the Kij\u00f3w.Centrum theatre.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n What is\u00a0more, Krakow will be\u00a0visited by\u00a0one of\u00a0the most famous and popular Israeli writers, a\u00a0master of\u00a0short fiction, screenwriter and lecturer \u2013 Etgar Keret<\/b>. The documentary about the writer will be\u00a0shown as\u00a0a part of\u00a0\u201cWorld Stories\u201d section, and both the filmmakers and the protagonist confirmed their participation in\u00a0the festival. They will meet with the audience on\u00a0May 30th in\u00a0the Kij\u00f3w.Centrum theatre.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n For the fifth time, in\u00a0cooperation with the Foundation for AGH, the festival will organize a\u00a0special section Docs+Science \u2013 the screenings of\u00a0the most interesting scientific films and meetings with the experts. Among many films in\u00a0this section there is\u00a0a documentary film\u00a0\u201cJane\u201d<\/b> (dir. Brett Morgen know for the previously awarded in\u00a0Krakow film \u201cKurt Cobain: Montage of\u00a0Heck\u201d) \u2013 the story of\u00a0an exceptional researcher Jane Goodall, who spent most of\u00a0her life among chimpanzees. The screening will take place on\u00a0May 31st in\u00a0the Kij\u00f3w.Centrum theatre.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n The special event of\u00a0this year\u2019s edition will be\u00a0the Friday film evening (June 1st) \u201cRaise Your Glass to\u00a0Rzeczpospolita\u201c<\/b>, during which the following films, accompanied by\u00a0unique music performances, will be\u00a0presented: \u201cRze\u017abiarz z\u00a0kamer\u0105\u201d (\u201cSculptor with the Camera\u201d), edited by\u00a0Marcin Gi\u017cycki from the footage made in\u00a0the 1920\u2019s by\u00a0the count August Zamoyski, and an\u00a0incomplete copy of\u00a0a 35mm film \u00a0\u201cPolonia Restituta 1928\u201d discovered in\u00a0the National Film Archive. Two bands \u2013 The Beat Freaks and SALK \u2013 will be\u00a0performing. The organizers of\u00a0this special screening are: National Film Archive \u2013 Audiovisual Institute, Silent Film Festival and Krakow Film Festival.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The filmmakers coming back to\u00a0the festival this year are: Talal Derki<\/b> (\u201cReturn to\u00a0Homs\u201d) with his latest film \u201cOf Fathers and Sons\u201d (awarded at\u00a0Sundance), Till Schauder<\/b>, the last year\u2019s winner of\u00a0the DocFilmMusic competition, who will present his film \u201cThe Reggae Boyz\u201d, \u00a0Kaleo La\u00a0Belle<\/b>, the winner of\u00a0the KFF documentary competition in\u00a02010, who will bring his new documentary \u201cFell in\u00a0Love with a\u00a0Girl\u201d and Zosya Rodkevich<\/b>, the Golden Horn winner for her film \u201cMy Friend Boris Nemtsov\u201d, who will show her documentary \u201cWhite Mama\u201d.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Among Polish filmmakers we\u00a0will see: Marta Prus<\/b>, the author of\u00a0the widely known documentary \u201cOver the Limit\u201d, that secured her a\u00a0place on\u00a0the prestigious Variety magazine list; Marta Pajek<\/b>, last year\u2019s winner for her animation \u201cImpossible Figures and Other Stories II\u201d, whose latest film \u201cIII\u201d was selected to\u00a0the competition in\u00a0Cannes and Grzegorz Zariczny<\/b>, the director behind the film \u201cThe Whistle\u201d which was awarded at\u00a0Sundance, who comes back to\u00a0the festival with his film \u201cThe Last Lesson\u201d about high school graduates from the Krakow district of\u00a0Nowa Huta.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n As always the festival prepared the screenings of\u00a0music films in\u00a0the open air cinema at\u00a0the foot of\u00a0Wawel Castle <\/b>(Sound of\u00a0Music<\/b>), films awarded in\u00a0the befriended festivals (Festival Awards Winners<\/b>), Polish documentary, animated and short films directed both by\u00a0the young filmmakers and recognised directors (Polish Panorama<\/b>), Kids&Youth \u2013 cinema for the young<\/b>, last year\u2019s most widely discussed documentaries from different parts of\u00a0the world (World Stories<\/b>) and films made in\u00a0European countries (Somewhere in\u00a0Europe<\/b>).<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The tickets will be\u00a0available <\/b>on the festival website www.krakowfilmfestival.pl<\/a> and in\u00a0the festival theatres (Kij\u00f3w.Centrum, Mikro cinema, Kino Pod Baranami, Krakowskie Centrum Kinowe ARS).<\/p>\n <\/p>\n During the festival all the tickets will be\u00a0available in\u00a0the Festival Centre in\u00a0Ma\u0142opolski Ogr\u00f3d Sztuki.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Festival Newspaper<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n
