Documentary Directed by Juliette Binoche in The New Section of the Krakow Film Festival

An outstanding actress whose body of work encompasses over a hundred roles and the most prestigious accolades in world cinema – including an Academy Award, the Palme d’Or, and the Silver Bear – joins the roster of Personalities, a newly launched section of the Krakow Film Festival. The programme of this section, which introduces audiences to distinguished creative figures from across various disciplines of art, is going to feature In-I in Motion – the directorial debut of the celebrated French artist.

Binoche, famous for her collaborations with such filmmakers as Michael Haneke and Leos Carax, and particularly dear to Polish audiences for her role in Krzysztof Kieślowski’s entry in the Three Colours trilogy and in Małgorzata Szumowska’s Elles, has repeatedly demonstrated her remarkable versatility as a performer, playing such disparate characters as Catherine Earnshaw in Wuthering Heights or the sculptor Camille Claudel. This time, she turns to a deeply personal material, serving as the film’s subject and its director simultaneously.

In In-I in Motion, Juliette Binoche revisits an artistic experiment from 2007, when she and the British choreographer and dancer Akram Khan created the stage production In-I. Nearly two decades on, she has made a documentary based on hours of archival footage documenting the making of that project. The film leads its audience from the earliest meetings and rehearsals, through the intensive process of preparation, to the final performance. It is not merely a story about the performance itself but, more fundamentally, about the creative act – the risk, discipline, trust and the personal boundaries one must overcome. The convergence of distinct artistic languages – dance, acting, performance, and cinema – sets the rhythm of this story, yet its essence reveals itself not solely in the finale but in all that leads to it: the exertion, the tension, and the difficult emotions that are intrinsic to the act of creation.

This is the first title announced from the new section, which will be introduced at the 66th edition of the Krakow Film Festival. We are going to reveal more films shortly, inviting audiences to encounter outstanding Personalities from the world of the arts.
