She wore male outfits, smoked cigars and, with her coarse voice, sang the repertoire that had been reserved for men until then. She was friends with Frida Kahlo and owes her great comeback to the stage to Pedro Almodóvar, among others. Chavela Vargas, who died in 2012, was an extraordinary and controversial figure in the Mexican music world. The film tells her story using unique conversations with the artist recorded 20 years before her death.

Daresha Kyi

Award-winning television director and producer with over 25 years of experience. She is a graduate of New York’s Tisch School of the Arts and a film directing course at the American Film Institute. She has directed Land Where My Fathers Died, has been an executive producer of Thugs, The Musical as well as numerous television programmes and has worked for such TV stations as AMC, E!, and WE. She is the lead vocalist of the band Reciprocity.
