Father Franciszek Dźwigoński, a parish priest in Maków Podhalański, is preparing his parishioners for the celebratory crowning of the painting of Our Lady of Maków Podhalański by Pope John Paul II. The pilgrimage that sets out from Maków Podhalański to Krakow’s Common to meet the Holy Father is peculiar as the image of Our Lady of Maków Podhalański is being driven by more than one hundred cars. This momentous event prompts Father Dźwigoński to reflect on the role of the Polish Church in post-war Poland and the fate of Poles under the German occupation and the Soviet domination. The priest’s reflections make the second layer of the film narration, which was created on the basis of parish documents and many hours of conversations.
