The Metamorphosis of Mr. Samsa

Canada | 1977 | animated | 10 min. Caroline Leaf Retrospective

When Mr Samsa woke up one day, he was surprised to learn that he turned into an awful worm – this is the beginning of Franz Kafka’s short story which served as a basis for this animation. Because of his repugnant appearance, Mr Samsa is rejected by his family in an instant and his life turns into a labyrinth from which is it hard to find a way out. At any moment, he is accompanied by the feeling of helplessness and exclusion. Surrealism and absurdity are emphasised by the sand used in animation, which smoothly transforms into consecutive frames.
