CASE STUDY: “SYNTHETIC SINCERITY” by MARC ISAACS

Renowned British documentary filmmaker Marc Isaacs will discuss his film “Synthetic Sincerity,” presented in the KFF Documentary Film Competition. The film blends documentary and fictional elements – and it’s not always easy to tell where one ends and the other begins. How did the idea for the film come about and develop? What was the collaboration with the subjects like? This case study will show how the filmmakers developed a humorous yet moving narrative structure that transcends conventional formulas and conventions.

Marc Isaacs documentary film director and producer. Since 2001, he has directed more than 10 creative documentaries for the BBC and Channel 4. His films have won Grierson, Royal Television Society and BAFTA awards, as well as numerous prizes at international festivals. In 2006, he had a retrospective at the États généraux du film documentaire de Lussas and his work has been included in numerous documentary books and academic studies. In 2008, Marc Isaacs received an honorary doctorate from the University of East London for his documentary work.
