The film shows the double life of a Soviet proletarian. Out of propaganda newsreels, the director extracted the essence of everyday life – mundane physical work – and contrasted it with the fragments of “official” life in the Soviet Union. The hallmark of Loznitsa, i.e. adding subtle sound to archival footage, makes it possible to feel the atmosphere of work at a kolkhoz or metallurgic furnace and, at the same time, serves as a contrast to trivial, ideologically formatted interviews with workers or overtly persuasive fragments of revues.
