Today We Are Going to Build a House

Russia1996documentary28'

In the most literal sense, the film is an observation of a construction site somewhere in Russia. However, its power of expression is determined by the details that let us gain a deeper insight, which include the subtle emphasis of humorous scenes and a perceptive, satirical take on the mess at the site around which a stray dog is roaming. Sergei Loznitsa peeks behind the façade capturing situations that contradict the ironic title which sounds like a slogan from communist production films. Everything follows a rather slow rhythm interrupted with slapstick mishaps. Nevertheless, the house is being built very fast.
