"Close" is an attempt to confront the ambiguous position of contemporary traditional Japanese jiutamai dance. By creating an effect of intimate intimacy and giving the dancer / dance protagonist a voice, Hana Umeda attempts to reclaim both for herself and for the entire multi-generational community of jiutamai dancers, agency and subjectivity.
