Ai Weiwei's Turandot

Italy, USA2025documentary78'DocFilmMusic Competition

When a world-renowned Chinese artist and activist embarks upon the project of staging a classic opera, there is no doubt that it will be a revolutionary interpretation. The audience can observe the process of creating the production on the stage of the Rome Opera House with the participation of eminent artists from different cultures and countries. However, the most interesting is the way Ai Weiwei brings Puccini’s work to life using references to the contemporary world. By introducing the theme of the refugee crisis, the pandemic or the war in Ukraine into the libretto, he once again proves to be an artist who believes that art can influence reality.
