In 2014, the Copenhagen Zoo authorities decided that a giraffe named Marius should be euthanised. The decision, scientifically justified, provoked an avalanche of global public reaction. It revealed the persistence as well as naivety of the view of nature’s harmony and peace. An experienced documentary filmmaker, Max Kestner, was prompted to question popular beliefs about the essence of life, consciousness, and the alleged uniqueness of the human species. The result is a hybrid, poetic and surprising film diary of his investigations.
