Monk in Pieces

She is an absolute artist whose vocal and performance work has never lent itself to easy classification. It is said that Meredith Monk’s voice expresses the ineffable and her music comes from another planet. In the film, tributes to the nun-like American artist are paid by Björk, Philip Glass and David Byrne, among others. However, over half a century ago, when she started performing, she had to carve out her own place on the stage – as a performer and as a woman. This documentary is a collage of Monk’s extraordinary activities and personal reflections when confronted with the past and the inevitable passing of time.
