Girls of 1960

Latvia2022documentary72'Jak w zwierciadle (2023)

A poignant and painfully honest film about the generation of 60-year-old Latvian women, friends from secondary school born in the era of communism. Contrasting sentimental archival footage with the interviews conducted over the years, the documentary author reveals the divide between the official image of gender equality and the crude reality. Did the fall of the USSR and the arrival of the free market help the film characters to break out of the traditional roles of mothers, wives and ‘guardians of the hearth’? How have their views on relationships, children, work and money changed with age? Who has managed to fulfill her early dreams?
