My Country So Beautiful

Poland2019documentary29'Konkurs polski (2019)

The ironic title of the documentary refers to the exacerbation of radical sentiments in Poland in the last few years. According to the information at the beginning, it is a “non-chronological documentation of selected social events”. The director juxtaposes rallies, demonstrations and street riots as well as speeches of antifascist organisations. A non-linear structure creates the sense of escalation of strong emotions and hatred during public gatherings. Seen through Grzegorz Paprzycki's lens, Poles seem to be a nation deeply conflicted, even divided into groups that use the same notions, yet understood in a totally different way.
