Walls

Poland1987animated8'Retrospektywa Piotra Dumały (2021)

Electrifying expression and the gloomy Kafkaesque atmosphere of entrapment mark this sombre story about a man and his disconsolate life. The protagonist is imprisoned in a room without windows or doors. His eyes are closely watching the walls, his ears catch every murmur. The chances of breaking free are nil. Extraordinarily sophisticated black and white graphics and a suggestive score consistent with claustrophobic images in which Przemysław Gintrowski’s poignant music plays the leading part, next to natural effects and drama-enhancing silence, brought Walls a true cascade of festival trophies.
