The film director, Karen Winther, has always felt an outsider. Looking for her own place, at the age of 16 she ended up as a member of the Norwegian extremist movement which was inspired, among others, by the activity of German Neo-Nazis. Two years later, Winther managed to escape from the organisation, but this experience has been haunting her until today. Trying to understand her own choices, she decides to talk to the persons who, just like her, left the ranks of extreme right-wing organisations, which has influenced their later lives in a variety of ways.

She was born in 1978 in Norway. She graduated from the National Film and Television School in 2012. Her first feature documentary was The Betrayal, a personal film about Karen’s membership in a group pf Norwegian extremists in her youth. It has premiered at IDFA winning several awards. Exit is her second feature documentary where Winther continues to explore brutal extremism from her personal perspective. The film has been distinguished at Nordic Docs. Karen also works for television as a director and editing producer.
