Mass for the Homeland

Finland1985documentary38'Retrospektywa Jarmo Jääskeläinena (2022)

A mass at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Warsaw for the intention of the homeland celebrated for the first time without Father Jerzy Popiełuszko. An insightful and poignant recording of the ceremony is interwoven with extensive excerpts from Father Popiełuszko’s last sermon, which he delivered in Bydgoszcz several hours before his death. The director talks to the witnesses of that night’s tragic events. The film includes rich iconography, the speech of General Kiszczak and the scenes from the trial of the priest’s killers. First prize in the documentary category at the Tampere International Short Film Festival.
