In the context of the escalating climate crisis and the rapid development of digital technologies, it is necessary to take a new look at the role of media education in shaping informed and responsible filmmakers. The panel discussion will focus on exploring the challenges and opportunities of integrating a sustainability perspective into the education programs for future film producers and media designers

The discusion will include a presentation of the GEM (Green Education in Media) project—co-funded by the ERASMUS+ grant program of the European Union under grant no. 2022-1-DE01-KA220-HED-000088645.—which aims to adapt curricula to current environmental realities. The project emphasizes the need to expand traditional approaches to media education by incorporating critical reflection on the environmental impact of technology, as well as by implementing sustainable design principles.
The panel will also highlight initiatives at the institutional level, such as those undertaken by the Sustainability Office for Teaching, established at Konrad Wolf Film University Babelsberg.
Panelists will include Sophie Tummescheit, Nicole Loeser, Monika Głowacka, and Małgorzata Kotlińska, bringing a diverse range of perspectives and experiences.
The discussion will be moderated by Marta Materska-Samek.
PANELISTS:



- Sophie Tummescheit
Sophie Tummescheit has been an academic assistant at the Film University Babelsberg since 2020. She is a certified project manager and has experience in coordinating international research projects. Sophie holds a degree in Design and an MA in Cross Media, and is an experienced and certified workshop facilitator for co-design processes. She has been responsible for the conception and implementation of project- based online and offline courses aiming at achieving a sustainable future. Her particular focus is on the development of methods for innovation processes, and the creation of teaching materials in these fields.
- Nicole Loeser
Nicole Loeser is a researcher, lecturer, and expert in systemic innovation, participatory foresight, and transformational project management. With an interdisciplinary academic background in economics, cultural studies, musicology, and visual arts, she also holds an MBA in Digital Transformation and is currently pursuing a PhD in Film and TV Production, focusing on Producing Social Art for Transformation. Nicole teaches Social & Future Design and System Innovation at multiple universities and has collaborated with over 50 universities worldwide, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across sectors. As Director of the Institute for Art and Innovation (IFAI), and co-founder of the Art For Futures Lab and The Futuring Alliance, she specializes in Transformative Innovation, integrating art, science, and systemic change methodologies to develop future-oriented pathways and levers for complex global challenges.
- Dr inż. Małgorzata Kotlińska
Lecturer at the Film School in Lodz, a researcher also associated with CICANT (Lusófona University, Portugal). She specializes in film production management, with a particular focus on project management methodologies. She is the author of the award-winning doctoral dissertation Contemporary Film Project Management Methods and the monograph Agile in Film (2023). She is involved in international research projects, including CRESCINE (development of small film markets in Europe) and GEM (green media education). Her work focuses on sustainable film production and the use of new technologies in education and the creative industry. She is a member of the Polish Filmmakers Association.


- Dr Marta Materska-Samek
Ph.D., Assistant professor and researcher at Jagiellonian University, a guest researcher of the Centre for Research in Applied Communication, Culture, and New Technologies CICANT (Lusofona University) in the context of CresCine Horizon Europe project, with specialised expertise in the film and creative industries. Since earning her Ph.D. in Management Sciences from Jagiellonian University in 2016, Marta has been contributing to the development of multiple project such as EIT Culture & Creativity (2022–2023), PACESETTERS: Powering Artistic and Cultural Entrepreneurship to Drive the Climate Transition, and IMPULSE: IMmersive digitisation: uPcycling cULtural heritage towards new reviving strategies. As the chairwoman of the Working Group for National Smart Specialisation 12 Creative Industries at the Ministry of Development and Technology, Marta contributes to shaping policies in the creative sector.
- Monika Głowacka
Deputy Director of Polish Creative Industries Development Center (national cultural institution). Until October 2024 Head of the Łódź Film Commission Department at EC1 Łódź – City of Culture (cultural institution), which manages the work of the Łódź Film Fund. Associated with the film industry since 2007. She represented the Commission in industry organizations such as: AFCI (International Association of Film Commissioners), CineRegio – an organization of European film funds, Polish Producers Alliance (KIPA), where she chaired the section of Regional Film Funds. She had many years of experience in working with film crews. Initiator and coordinator of the work of the group „Agreement for green audiovisual production – Film for climate”, which is formed by representatives of the Polish audiovisual market. Involved in activities popularizing sustainable film and television production in Poland: coordinator and co-author of the „Green Guidelines for the Audiovisual Industry” https://greenfilmtourism.eu/green/, member of the jury of the „Climate Film” award in 2022, at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia, substantive coordinator of the training series „Green Audiovisual Production Laboratory”; organized by KIPA, author of the evaluation report prepared for the Green Film Tourism and project “Academy of Sustainable Av Production”.
