A Monkey's Tale
France, Germany, Hungary1999animated76'Jean-François Laguionie Retrospective
In the treetops lives a tribe of monkeys which believe that demons lurk at the foot of the plants. A rebellious teenager, who does not fear the monsters, accidentally falls from a branch and ends up in an unknown world. It turns out to be inhabited by another tribe of monkeys, reminiscent of medieval society. They have kings and princesses, read thick books, engage in astrology and consider monkeys jumping in the treetops to be savages. This is just the beginning of a crazy adventure when there will be an attempt of a power takeover and someone will need to grow up fast.

Jean-François Laguionie (born 1939 in Besançon) is a French animation filmmaker who blends surrealism and impressionism. A student of Paul Grimault, he abandoned theatre in favor of animated film as an art form. His style is marked by gouache technique, interplay of light, and maritime motifs—seen in works like The Lady and the Cellist, Rowing Across the Atlantic, and Louise by the Shore. He also explores social and political themes while maintaining a poetic, unique style.
