The Day I Will Never Forget

United Kingdom2002documentary90'Kim Longinotto Retrospective

Kim Longinotto travels with her camera to Kenya to confront the barbarian procedure of female genital mutilation, which is still practiced today despite being illegal. The director meets not only the victims of circumcision and their direct perpetrators but also young women who actively oppose violence and fight for a systemic change. By following one of the characters and observing drastic procedures, the viewer may discover the superstitions and traditions standing behind them. Nevertheless, there is hope that as time passes not only the law but also collective mentality will transform. WARNING! Drastic scenes and vulgar language.
