‘She is a good girl, but too smart’ – says the father of the eponymous protagonist. Salma, the most famous poet of southern India, who was born in a Moslem family, spent 9 years in isolation, like many other girls doomed to social exclusion after reaching sexual maturity. However, Salma found a way of escaping her loneliness and anger by writing poetry in secret. Many years later, she returned to her native village as a completely different person. She became a spokesperson for women in a similar situation. Will the new generation be ready to follow in her footsteps?
