Rough Aunties

United Kingdom, South Africa2008documentary103'Kim Longinotto Retrospective

You’d better not mess with them – the activists from Durban are relentless when they go to war against superstition, patriarchy or cultural taboos in order to defend harmed children. Their organization is called Operation Bobbi Bear because they use stuffed toys to work with the youngest victims of sexual violence. The camera accompanies the women during everyday interventions, when they are trying step by step to change the reality of South Africa, a country painfully afflicted by social and economic divisions, the conspiracy of silence or the AIDS epidemic. Despite difficulties and personal losses, the eponymous aunties shall never surrender.
