The Darkness of Day
USA2009documentary26'Films by Jay Rosenblatt
A compilation documentary composed of fragments of archival films dealing with suicide and the accompanying states of depression, loneliness and sadness. On screen appear stories of people standing on the brink of a final decision: an elderly couple planning to end their lives together, a Japanese teenager jumping into a volcano, and Ernest Hemingway choosing to take his own life. These images are accompanied by diary entries written by a friend of the filmmaker’s brother, who also died by suicide. By combining excerpts from old educational films, newsreels and archival footage, Jay Rosenblatt creates a personal and unsettling essay about human fears and obsessions, and about how culture attempts to come to terms with the unimaginable.
