House with a Voice

Germany2024documentary87'The Balkans in Focus

In Albania, there is a burrnesha tradition. The term refers to women who chose to live as men, particularly in households without a male heir. This choice liberated them from the pressure to marry, and in the eyes of society they became men, thereby gaining their rights. Although the decision entailed the complete transformation of their appearance and dress, the Kanun virgins still identified as women. Today, with social changes, there are few of them left. The film follows six sworn virgins showing their daily lives, where freedom and independence intertwine with sacrifice.
