They Were All Named Anzhelika
Poland2026fiction14'National competition
In a tacky beauty salon, Anżelika works as a manicurist, dozing off between stations and listening to the stories of her clients. She is trying to return to her law studies when her chaotic daily life is disrupted by an unplanned pregnancy. Suddenly, she finds herself without a job or home and does not know what decision to make. Amidst other people’s opinions, guinea pigs and conversations with an AI bot, she searches for meaning and her own voice. A tragicomic tale of pressure, loneliness and the absurdity of modern life becomes a story of regaining agency.
